Migration in the Americas: On the run from water in Panama

Photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen traveled from the southern tip of South America to the far reaches of Alaska on the North American continent to explore migration in the Americas. What he found both supported and defied stereotypes, which he reported on a website and an app for iPad called Via Panam.
Thousands of Kuna???indigenous people living in an archipelago off the northern coast of Panama???are facing a drastic lifestyle change because of rising seas.
Kuna Yala, or Kuna Land, is comprised of 365 islands and a narrow, 250-mile-long strip of land on the Caribbean coast. Thirty-six of the islands are inhabited.
In August, the first round of evacuations will force some Kuna to the mainland because of dangerous living conditions, affecting 65 families. Ultimately, all of the islands will be evacuated ? affecting 36,000 people ??and new dwellings are being built and funded on the mainland by the Panamanian government.

The inhabited islands are chock full of houses built of reeds and palm leaves and no match for storms and rising water. Historically, flooding was comparatively rare, but residents now regularly contend with surging water.
Experts say sea levels rose nearly seven inches over the past century, and levels could rise another two feet by the end of this century.
The Kuna have lived on the Caribbean coast in autonomy for more than 80 years. Two centuries ago, most Kunas lived on the mainland, but they relocated to the islands following an epidemic. They make their living from fishing and farming. They grow manioc, pineapples and bananas in their small fields on the mainland, but their most lucrative crop is coconuts.

The Kuna form a tight-knit community, have their own language, and are well-organized. Decisions are made collectively in the Onmaked Nega ? the assembly hall. Meetings are presided over by a?saila, a political and spiritual leader.
The coming evacuation was debated at the hall, and was eventually approved after long discussion. Many residents are still afraid of being tricked by the state. Because they have no financial resources to build new accommodations for themselves, they ultimately agreed to the evacuation plans.

Across the water, on the mainland, lies a 4-year-old road???the only one in the vicinity. It used to be a 12-hour walk to reach the Pan American Highway, which connects to Panama City, the country's capital. Now it takes three hours.
As a result, many of the young Kuna have left for the capital city. Conversely many more consumer goods, like televisions and Coca-Cola, now reach Kuna Yala.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops, implements and enforces policies and procedures through systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the university. Recommends and develops policies, procedures and systems to meet university objectives.
- Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the organization's fiscal functions.
- Ensures timely and accurate budget analysis and financial reporting for the management team, president and board of trustees.
- Plans, prepares, and supervises the development of the university's annual budget for presentation to the president and the board of trustees.
- Ensures that financial resources support the institutional strategic plan and priorities.
- Directs all university investments and banking operations.
- Ensures compliance with appropriate regulatory agencies by continually monitoring operations, programs and physical resources.
- Participates in state, federal and/or independent audits.
- Disseminates information within the university on budgetary processes and procedures related to operating and capital expenditures.
- Advises the president and the management team on the impact of long range financial and organizational planning.
- Provides strategic support to the president and the board of trustees.
- Recommends the establishment of the student tuition and fee structure.
- Provides leadership and guidance regarding the development and implementation of capital planning and operations projects as well as the maintenance of the physical plant and grounds.
- Provides leadership and guidance to human resources and assures policies and procedures are in accordance with collective bargaining, state and federal laws, and university goals and objectives.
- Provides leadership to the university's sustainability program.
- Evaluates the finance/administrative services structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness.
- Collaborates with internal departments and external agents and constituencies to provide financial information/reports in order to accomplish strategic initiatives.
- Oversees the operation of auxiliary services, including food service and bookstore vendors.
- Represents the university at meetings and functions as requested by the president.
- Assumes responsibilities within his/her competence for other duties assigned by the president.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field; CPA preferred.
- Extensive financial and budget management experience is required; experience in higher education is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, unquestioned integrity, superior organization and leadership skills, and strong strategic planning abilities are required.
- Evidence of an appreciation for the importance of diversity is essential.

York University Libraries seeks a motivated and service-oriented librarian to serve as a member of the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library and to provide reference and research assistance, instruction, collections and liaison services related to business teaching and research at York University.
The Peter F. Bronfman Business Library, located in the award-winning Seymour Schulich Building, provides facilities, resources, and reference, research and instructional services to the business programs of York University, including those of the highly ranked Schulich School of Business. A comprehensive collection of print, electronic and data resources support quantitative and qualitative research in business and economics. Three full-time librarians and five full-time support staff are currently based in the Bronfman Library.
York University Libraries consists of a large central library and three branch libraries, one of which is the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library. York?s collections have over six million items, including nearly two and a half million book volumes and a multitude of electronic research databases including most of the major business online resources.
The successful candidate will participate in teaching, reference, collection development, liaison, research and assessment activities in the Libraries and elsewhere on campus, and in the development of new programs and services. The librarian will liaise with faculty and academic units, and develop collections for designated business subjects. The librarian will provide instruction support for business subjects. This individual will support faculty and students with business data research needs and will make effective use of statistical methods, systems and tools to help clients locate, evaluate and use business data resources. He/she will work with the finance librarian to assist patrons in the effective use of financial resources for research and study. The successful candidate will participate in the shared decision-making of the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library and on collegial committees of the Libraries and of the University. He/she will be expected to work regular evening and weekend shifts.

Romney says Akin should exit Missouri Senate race
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is calling on Republican Todd Akin to abandon his Senate bid in Missouri following the congressman's comments about rape.
Romney on Tuesday pointed to a statement from a group of current and former Missouri legislators who urged Akin to drop his bid against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
Romney says, quote, "I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race."
Akin said that a woman's body has ways to prevent pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."
Romney had previously denounced Akin's comments, but he had not yet urged the Missouri congressman to drop out.
Akin has vowed to stay in the race and has described the calls to leave an "overreaction."
