NEGOTIATION MADE EASY ? STEP INTO THE OTHER PERSONS ...

How many readers are fearful of negotiation in their business or personal lives?

How many do not like to haggle for the best price?

How many pay more for something than they should?

In our experience far too many people fall into this category. They

come out of a meeting or shop and feel that the outcome just wasn?t fair.

Negotiation isn?t about being fair. It?s about one party getting the other party to see, understand and agree with the viewpoint of another. Now there is inevitably some form of risk taking involved in negotiation and that means that we have to move into mostly un-chartered areas, something that most of us feel uncomfortable with.? Some would even describe negotiation as a pursuit full of fear.

It doesn?t have to be this way.? So here are some tips and techniques to help make negotiation easy:

1. Before you enter into negotiation, picture your desired outcome in your mind. Picture the scene and rehearse in your mind what you would like to say and hear.

2. Obtain as much information as possible prior to the negotiation.? If you plan on purchasing any goods or services try some comparative shopping first.? Get a feel for the marketplace.

Get the facts.

3. Establish what concessions, if any, you are prepared to offer in the negotiation.

4. Consider the timing and environment of the event.? Ensure that all parties feel comfortable with these elements.

5. Step into the other party?s shoes for moment and try to understand their desired outcomes.? What do they want out of the negotiation?

6. Do ask questions.? If it helps compile a list of questions beforehand.? This is only a business transaction.? This is not personal.? Don?t be impulsive or feel that you should buy at the seller?s asking price there and then.

7. Don?t just ask for a knockdown price; ask for extras if appropriate

i.e. free delivery, a speedier service. Find out the price at which they are prepared to sell. Ask questions such as ? what can you do on the price for me??? Let?s be straight you have worked hard for your money and you deserve to get as much for it as you possibly can.? If it?s not your money, aren?t you obliged to get the best deal possible?

8. 3 P?s ? Remain positive, polite and peaceful throughout the negotiation. It is only business and you have the right to negotiate.

9. If you don?t feel that the deal is right for you, STOP!? Shop around some more, you can always return if you want to.

10. Enjoy! Do negotiate. The more you do it the easier it becomes.

Remember: For many goods and services the price is never the price; negotiate, you?re worth it.
