Crew takes care of Union

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:02 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Milovan Mirosevic scored the tiebreaking goal in the 87th minute to lift the Columbus Crew to a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday night, eliminating the Union from playoff contention.

Jairo Arrieta scored twice for the Crew (14-11-6).

Danny Cruz scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute and Jack McInerney tied it in the 86th for the Union (8-15-6), just before the Crew went back ahead.

Arrieta put Columbus ahead in the 44th minute off a service from the right side by Sebastian Miranda.

He added the second in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time following a goal kick by goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, who had his first career assist.

Orioles beat Red Sox 6-3, move closer to playoffs

(AP) ? The champagne was on ice, plastic shields were in place above the cubicles in the Baltimore clubhouse and couches were removed to accommodate a celebration 15 years in the making.

The party never happened.

After the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 6-3 Sunday, around two dozen players and coaches took scoreboard watching to a new level by staying on the field at Camden Yards and rooting for the Texas Rangers to defeat the Los Angeles Angels.

If the Angels had lost, Baltimore would have clinched its first playoff berth since 1997. After exchanging high-fives and fist-bumps following their fourth straight win, the Orioles gathered along the first-base line to watch the scoreboard telecast of the ninth inning, which began with Texas winning 4-3.

Many in the crowd of 41,257 stood and watched, too.

But a two-run double by Torii Hunter put the Angels in front and ruined the fun. As the Orioles walked off the field, manager Buck Showalter waved to the crowd and offered a fist-pump of encouragement.

The Angels' 5-4 win kept the Orioles' magic number to clinch a wild-card berth at one. The Angels and Rangers were scheduled to wrap up the doubleheader on Sunday night, and while a loss by Los Angeles would put Baltimore in the postseason, that wouldn't do anything to get the champagne out of that enclosed container.

Sitting in front of his locker with a beer in his hand, first baseman Mark Reynolds said, "It would have definitely been cool to celebrate with our fans. They've been supporting us all year. To be able to celebrate out there with them and take in the moment, it would have been pretty neat."

Baltimore, on the other hand, is looking to go into the postseason as AL East champions. The Orioles remain tied atop the division standings with the New York Yankees, who rallied to beat Toronto 9-6.

Both contenders have three games left. New York begins a season-ending series against visiting Boston on Monday night, and the Orioles travel to Tampa Bay.

Baltimore held out hope of cracking open a few cases of champagne in Florida.

"I take particular enjoyment in ruining someone else's clubhouse," reliever Darren O'Day said.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy added, "I'm not going to say there's no disappointment, but we all understand we need to keep playing good baseball to get where we want to be. We'll just worry about ourselves and win the next three games."

Who'd have thought the Orioles would be talking about division titles, playoff berths and champagne after 14 consecutive losing seasons and four straight last-place finishes? The Orioles (92-67) already have 23 more wins than a year ago.

"Our goal now is try to figure out a way to play some more baseball games here at Camden," Showalter said. "Hopefully, it's see you later."

Hardy, Nate McLouth and Chris Davis hit solo homers, and Jim Thome drove in two runs for Baltimore. The Orioles completed a sweep and went 13-5 against Boston, their most wins in a single season versus the Red Sox since 1970 (13-5).

Joe Saunders (3-3) allowed three runs, eight hits and no walks in 7 1-3 innings for Baltimore. Obtained in a late-August trade with Arizona, Saunders has yielded a total of 12 earned runs in his last six starts.

Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his 50th save.

Cody Ross and Daniel Nava homered for the last-place Red Sox, who have dropped five straight and 16 of 22. Boston (69-90) last lost 90 games in 1966.

"We haven't had a good season," manager Bobby Valentine acknowledged.

Zach Stewart (0-2) gave up five runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 2 2-3 innings. In three starts this season he's surrendered eight home runs.

After being beaten and bashed by the Orioles, who hit seven homers in the three-game series, the Red Sox now head to Yankee Stadium.

A sunny, breezy fall afternoon couldn't have started much better for the Orioles. After the video board showed the Yankees and Angels losing early, McLouth hit the fourth pitch from Stewart over the left-field wall.

"After that just trying to do damage control," Stewart said. "Try to keep it at that score. Obviously I didn't do that."

Hardy and Davis followed with singles before Stewart hit Jones with a pitch to load the bases. After Matt Wieters bounced into a run-scoring 4-6-3 double play, Thome followed with grounder up the middle that beat the shift and rolled into the outfield, scoring Davis for a 3-0 lead.

Boston wasted doubles in the second and third innings before Hardy led off the bottom of the third with his 22nd home run. Jones singled with one out, and Thome chased Stewart with an RBI single.

Ross homered in the fourth to get the Red Sox to 5-1. Davis connected off Clayton Mortensen in the fifth, his 31st homer of the season and fourth in four games.

Nava homered in the seventh with a man on.

NOTES: Jones was chosen Orioles MVP in a vote among media covering the team, the second straight year he's won the award. "It is given to me, but I think the whole team deserves it," he said. ... Boston hit three doubles and now has a major-league leading 214 for the season. ... Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz, who's 2-4 with a 5.84 ERA lifetime against the Yankees, starts Monday night against CC Sabathia. Rookie Wei-Yin Chen (12-10) starts for Baltimore in Tampa Bay against Alex Cobb (10-9). ... The top three players in the Baltimore lineup ? McLouth, Hardy and Davis ? combined to go 6 for 10 with three HRs and five runs.

Potentially dangerous new malaria mosquito identified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? University of Notre Dame entomologists are part of a team of researchers that recently discovered a potentially dangerous new malaria-transmitting mosquito. The as yet unnamed, and previously unreported, mosquito breeds in the western areas of Kenya and has an unknown DNA match to any of the existing malaria-transmitting species.

The Anopheles species of mosquitoes which transmits malaria in Africa is already widely studied by researchers. It prefers to rest indoors during the day and feed on humans during the night. Current malaria control programs, including spraying of insecticides and using insecticide-treated bed nets, are designed with these behaviors in mind.

Although the new species has never been implicated in the transmission of malaria, new discoveries in its biting habits pose a threat because it was found to be active outdoors and prefers to bite people earlier in the evening, soon after sunset, when people are not protected by current malaria control techniques.

Neil Lobo, a Notre Dame research associate professor and Brandy St. Laurent, a former Notre Dame doctoral student, joined forces on the team of researchers that made the discovery. y Frank Collins, Notre Dame's George and Winifred Clark Professor of Biology, Collins was principal investigator of the Malaria Transmission Consortium effort funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The discovery was announced in a paper whose lead author was Jennifer Stevenson of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Catch Notes (for iPhone)

Writers like me take notes all day long. We jot things down during meetings, while walking the dog, and sometimes even in the middle of a sentence, any time an idea strikes. And so do students, office workers, and many others, leaving us all in need of a great app that put tools at our fingertips for capturing an idea before it disappears into the ether. Poof.

Catch Notes for iPhone, which has come a long way since it first appeared in the Apple App Store, comes close to being one such all-purpose note-taking tool, but still needs a little fine tuning. The app excels at supporting collaboration, and also has unique features. Plus, it uses the full, longer screen size of the iPhone 5. A few problems, such as buggy audio memos and the inability to customize the colors of folders (or "spaces" as they're called in Catch) to your liking should be fixed. The color issue in particular is a shame because color can do wonders for your data.

Evernote, which to be fair looks drab when side-by-side with Catch, remains my go-to note-syncing app and PCMag's Editors' Choice on the iPhone, because it works well, has all the core functionality you'll need, and integrates with a huge variety of other services, which is key. Catch has better and more interesting collaboration features, though.

Set Up and Sign In
The Catch iPhone app is a very simple to set up. After downloading the free app and launching it, new users have three choices for registering an account: 1) sign into your Catch account or set one up with an email address and password, 2) log in using your Google ID, or 3) log in using your Facebook account.

Catch starts you off with a sample note that contains information about how to create notes, organize them, and sync them. It's also nice to see this dummy note appear where one would otherwise face a dauntingly blank canvas.

Catch Notes' Design and Features
If you've used Catch's iPad app, the look of the iPhone version will immediately strike you. Design remains crucial, in my opinion, because if you intend to use an app a lot, you have to like what you see. Catch for iPhone uses color and dynamic menus to not only provide utility, but also lure you to want to play with the app. To start a new note, you press a plus sign in the bottom center of the screen, which pops open a radial menu with options for adding a reminder, image, typed note, audio note, or checklist item.

I like Catch's checklists better than Evernote's because Catch lets you have a checklist item as a note type, whereas you can only add checklists inside an Evernote note using paragraph formatting. In Catch for iPhone, your to-do tasks appear right on screen when you're looking at your list of notes. In Evernote, you have to open a note to see your to-do tasks.

In testing, the audio memo feature was very buggy. I was able to record just fine. A microphone appeared on screen, and it seemed to record my voice, as it responded to changes in my voice's volume. But when I saved and closed the audio memo, it would not playback. The following day, I finally had some success, but I don't know why it didn't work initially (and repeatedly). I was testing on a new iPhone 5, running iOS 6, with a strong Wi-Fi connection.

Catch for iPhone formerly did not have folders, relying only on tags for sorting, but it does now. Folders, also known as "spaces," let you group your notes much more effectively than tags alone. Each space has a name or title and a color, but you can't customize the colors, unfortunately. Whatever color Catch assigns, that's the one you get. I use color in all segments of my life to stay organized, and I really hate not being able to control which folders are assigned which colors.

One additional feature is the ability to add geo-location information to your note, a great feature for frequent travelers who need to be able to look up notes based on where a meeting or business took place.

Price
Just like Evernote, Catch apps are free, as is an account, but users can pay $4.99 per month or $44.99 per year to upgrade to a Pro account for a few extra perks. This costs the same as an Evernote Premium account ($45 per year).

A free Catch account gives you five spaces for private or shared notebooks (or "spaces") and the ability to add 70MB per month of new content. A Pro account lets you have 50 spaces, 1GB of new content uploaded per month, and the ability to attach office documents to your notes.

Unique Features: Tagging and Collaboration
Catch uses a unique tagging system for your notes. You create tags by typing a hashtag (#) before any word right in your note. The words then look as if they are hyperlinks, indicating that they're now tags. I can see how some users will find this concept simple because you never have to add tags as a secondary step. Tags are always at your fingertips while you're writing notes. The problem is you can't easily reference which tags you've used in the past. My problem is that this system allows for inconsistencies that don't occur when you can select tags from a pre-made list. For example, in Catch, I might write into one note the tag "#iPadApps" and in other places use the more general "#MobileApp" or "#MobileApps." As a highly organized person, seeing inconsistently written tags like these would drive me batty.

If you like Catch's unique tagging system, you'll probably also like its search box, which lets you look for hashtags on notes, or filter notes by other criteria, like favorite notes marked with a star or those that you've shared with collaborators.

Catch's collaborative take on notes really isn't like any other note-taking system I've seen, and in a good way. Basic collaboration takes the form of emailing notes to others, and that's nothing new. Every note in Catch has a comments thread at the bottom. I like that the user as well as the collaborators can discuss a note's content without anyone messing up the contents of the note itself. Imagine it in action in a business setting. Perhaps you're taking notes while traveling with colleagues or while at a conference. One person can make a note quickly while in a conference session and post it to her colleagues, and others read it, ask follow up questions, or simply add her two cents, all in the comments. Comments always stay with the note, too, so everything syncs to all your devices.

Catch All or Catch None?
The Catch iPhone app is a good choice for note-takers who need collaboration features, although the app still needs some fine tuning. If you're a stickler for consistency, as I am, you might find the hashtag-as-tagging feature not to your taste. The inability to choose your own colors for folder or "spaces" also kind of baffles me.

Evernote may not be as pretty, but it's more reliable and integrates with a huge array of other services, making it PCMag's Editors' Choice for iPhone note-taking apps. If your notes tend to be more along the lines of to-do lists, try one of my favorite apps, Awesome Note (+ToDo) ($3.99), which doesn't have its own syncing features but can integrate with Evernote if you need syncing.

How Much Money do you Need Start Roth (or Traditional) IRA

how much money to start a roth or traditional IRA

What are you waiting for?

You finally reached that point in your life where you know that you need to start investing, but the whole process intimidates you.

Many young investors falsely believe they since they?re not Mark Zuckerberg they don?t meet the minimum bankroll to get started.

Not true!!

I am constantly asked,

?How much does it take to open an IRA??

If you are a young investor and determined to start saving for your financial future, you?re in for a treat.

With most IRAs (traditional or Roth), there are no minimums.

Yup, that?s right.

Let?s see if I can add some clarity to the young investors who are looking to open an IRA and get started saving for their financial future.

How much does it really take?

When most people think of investing, they think of the big Wall Street firms where their investors have millions upon millions of dollars. While some of these big Wall Street firms may have their own minimums, typically to open an IRA, there isn?t one.

For example, you could go to a bank, a local Edward Jones office, or even online, and there are plenty of places where you can start an IRA with no minimum.

Scottrade, a popular online brokerage based out of St. Louis, Missouri, states on their website that there?s $500 minimum to open an account. The reality is that that?s not the case. That?s just a suggested amount, so that way when you make your first deposit, you actually have enough money to make your first trade.

Why no minimums?

An individual is only allowed to put up to $5000 into an IRA if you?re under the age of 50, $6000 if you?re over the age of 50, into an IRA each year. It?s not a requirement to put that amount in. That?s just the absolute most that you can. If you only wanted to put $50 into an IRA, you could do so.

Where I think most of the confusion comes into play is making the actual investments inside the IRA.

For example, if you only put in $100 into your IRA and you want to buy a share of Google stock, it?s not going to happen. With Google?s stock price currently being above $600 per share, you?re one-sixth away of being able to own that one share.

Whether you?re looking to buy an individual stock, an ETF, or an individual bond, you must have at least that much in your IRA before you can buy that investment.

Mutual Funds May Have Minimums

If you?re looking to purchase mutual funds inside your IRA, a lot of mutual funds will also have minimums, depending on the fund company. I?ve seen some mutual funds that have as little as $100 minimum investment and I?ve some as high as $25,000, sometimes $50,000 before you can even get in.

To make mutual funds more accessible for the new investor, some mutual funds will allow you to get in even if you don?t meet the minimum. They?ll do this only if you set up an automatic purchase that comes out of your checking or savings account that purchases the fund each and every month.

Starting out this is how I was able to invest into mutual funds.? I was having $50/month taken out of my checking account and being split between two mutual funds.

This is a way that I commonly suggest for new investors to get started with an IRA or any mutual fund investing since it prevents less of a chance of you not making that investment for the month because you wanted to go buy something that you don?t need.

An online option that makes this super easy is Betterment.??? They automatically rebalance your portfolio for you and for a small monthly charge ($3) you can begin investing a small amount.

Getting Started Investing With a Roth IRA

As you can see, often times there are no minimums in getting started with investing, especially in an IRA.

Rare Disease Science Challenge- Your Call to Action!

If you or a loved one is unlucky enough to be affected by a rare disease then it can be a continued uphill struggle. Your doctor will likely never have seen a case before which means you suffer with symptoms while awaiting diagnosis, and this can sometimes take years. Even when an accurate diagnosis is reached there may be few treatment options; the pharmaceutical companies just aren t interested in developing drugs to treat such a small market. For the majority (>95%) of the 7000 rare diseases there is no FDA approved therapy. Perhaps the cruelest twist of rare diseases, however, is that so many of the patients are young children. The NIH estimates that 50% of rare diseases affect children, and 30% of pediatric cases die before they reach their 5th birthday!

Collectively rare diseases are not rare. The fact is that while a disease might be labeled as rare , the number of persons suffering from one of the thousands of rare diseases is estimated at 10% of the population [1], or approx. 30 million people in the United States and 350 million people globally. Mainstream pharmaceutical companies have long ignored rare diseases. With the increasing de-centralization of scientific research, and the growth of the citizen science movement, however, there has never been a better time to tackle this problem head on. That s exactly what Assay Depot is doing by teaming up with the Rare Genomics Institute ? to bring awareness to the current broken system for diagnosing, treating and curing rare diseases.

The Rare Genomics Institute provides hope to children suffering with a rare disease. Most rare diseases are genetic in nature, caused by a mutation somewhere in the 3.2 billion bases of human DNA. The Rare Genomics Institute uses crowdfunding to pay for sequencing of the sick child s genome and then assembles a network of academic specialists who work together to identify the child s genetic mutation. Now Assay Depot has teamed up with The Rare Genomics Institute to take the process one-step farther, and go on the offensive with the Rare Disease Science Challenge.

The competition is open to researchers, foundations, or everyday people. Families with a child afflicted with a rare disease will have the opportunity to work with a network of academic researchers and use donated research services to develop research proposals tailored to their child?s needs. An expert panel of scientists will evaluate the research proposals with the final winner(s) selected by Facebook voting.

If we can improve the standard of care for just one rare disease we will bring relief to thousands of people, very likely children, who currently suffer. We think that is a dream worth fighting for. I am sure Chris and Hugh Hempel would agree. Their identical twin daughters, Addison and Cassidy, have been diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C, a rare, incurable and fatal genetic disease that causes progressive neurological deterioration. This week Global Genes, the leading rare and genetic disease patient advocacy organizations in the world, with the Kauffman Foundation is screening the Hempels story in Hollywood and revealing the grim truth; that diagnosing, treating and curing rare disease is moving at a tedious pace, and leaving heart-rending personal accounts in its path.

How can you help?

If you work for a company that offers research services or makes lab consumables, reagents or instruments ask them to get involved. The great thing about sponsorship is that it will cost your company very little, we re not asking for money, just a donation of time or resources. Does your company make antibodies? How about donating some production capacity? Do you sell DNA sequencers, or mass spec instruments? Could you run some samples in your lab for us?

If you put your mind to it there are a multitude of ways your company could get involved for very little cost, and in return get some great publicity, and help a very worthy cause.

For the rest of you please help publicize the Rare Disease Science Challenge, post it, blog it, tweet it, let s do everything we can to get the word out, and be a part of the solution.

Professional Social Networking with B2B Social Media

b2b professional social networkingI believe many B2B professionals struggle in their adoption of social media for professional use, because they see it as a marketing platform as opposed to a professional networking tool. Those who do see it purely as a marketing tool and use it as such, clog up a valuable business resource with spam. I have colleagues that are very active on Facebook for personal use, but can?t seem to get their heads around LinkedIn. CEOs and CMOs don?t have time for Twitter, let alone time to blog. Sales professionals are too busy chasing after prospects, so when they squeeze in the time for B2B social media, they make the mistake of using it for intrusive prospecting instead of professional networking. However, I think if these B2B professionals really understood the purpose and value of B2B social networking, then they would make more time for it and better use of it.

The is the second post in a series designed to help B2B professionals create better social strategies by thinking in terms of B2B social networking over B2B social media. This second installment explores the opportunity of building a stellar B2B professional network through social media and lays the foundation for the following more advanced topics to come.

  • The B2B Company Social Netork
  • Social Media for B2B Demand Generation
  • Social Networking for B2B Public Relations
  • Social Networking for B2B Sales Enablement

It is not another top ten list on how to tweet. So many poor efforts at B2B social networking result from trying to master how to do it without truly understanding what it is. Using social media to build your professional network is a very personal endeavor, and my hope is that this second post in the series will provide a few very personal ?aha moments? that help clarify your professional social networking strategy.

?

Professional Social Networking Aha #1 | Just Be Helpful

Imagine for a moment the consummate professional networker before the Internet age. Perhaps the best networker you?ve ever met. You know the one I am talking about. He or she is probably an entrepreneur, salesperson, executive or maybe just the life of every conference. I still have colleagues like this, offline only networkers. Some have networks so strong they frankly don?t need the Internet. They are also a) rich, b) retired or c) about to retire. If you don?t fall into one of these three categories, then I highly recommend building your professional networking skills online as well as off.

online professional networking

Now can you recall what made that person great at B2B professional networking? A litany of personal characterstics probably comes to mind: extroverted, energetic, fun, interesting, powerful, charismatic, attentive, and even athletic or attractive. These are all great qualities to have for building your professional network, unfortunately some of them are genetic and others may simply not be you. But, there is one thing we can all be and it is the cornerstone of B2B professional networking: helpful, because all professional networking is based on reciprocity and that is simply human. Everyone can be helpful if they set their mind to it. Building your professional network online is simple; be helpful online. In fact, every rule that applies for successful offline networking applies online. It?s not like we stop being human when we go online. The purpose of social networks is to help us socialize as humans, more broadly, more frequently and more efficiently.

Professional Social Networking Aha #2 | Make it Personal

Now imagine your consummate offline networker and think about the relationship between that person?s professional life and personal life. The best, the very best, never stop working. Their business life is seamlessly integrated into their personal life. Their business connections are frequently their friends. They socialize for business. For them, professional networking IS socializing. Again, unfortunately, that doesn?t work for the vast majority of us. However, what it does mean is that whatever you do decide to do in the way of professional social networking, you must be inescapably yourself. B2B professionals don?t follow or like logos, they follow and like colleagues. You can?t be superficial. Reciprocity demands that you be trusted, and trust demands that you be authentic.

b2b professional networking

One of the great things about professional social networking is that you actually have the opportunity to compensate for whatever weaknesses you have offline, because you don?t have to get on a plane, go to a meeting, or be the master of small talk to do it. You can stay in your comfort zone. For example, if you are a regular Chaotic Flow reader, it should be completely obvious by now that I am no master of small talk (and by the way, thank you for reading and don?t hesitate to comment or contact me). With social media, you get to choose where, when and how your professional persona appears online. How cool is that?! When you go to an offline networking event, client meeting or job interview, how much control do you have over whom you meet, your first impressions, and the flow of conversation. Online, you have immense control over all these things, because you design your Twitter page, you choose who to follow, and you decide when and where to join the conversation.

Professional Social Networking Aha #3 | Choose Your Battles

If like most people, you are not willing or able to be the always-on professional networker with complete integration of business and personal life, social media can help you compensate and augment your professional networking. For busy B2B professionals who want to accelerate their networking, but also want a personal life, I say choose your battles wisely. Despite what the top ten lists say, you don?t have to be on every social network.

every social network

In fact, trying to be on too manage every social network is probably a really bad idea for most people. Most of us simply don?t have the time. When you spread yourself too thin, your professional social networking quickly becomes spotty and superficial, leading to poor results and poor motivation. What you should do is pick a few B2B social media outlets that fit your personality and your lifestyle. You are better off with a active Flickr site with pictures of your business travels and vacations, than you are with an abandoned blog or Twitter account. You might just be surprised at the number of professional colleagues you meet who have been where you?ve been and are happy to swap stories, because that leads to the next most important aspect of building your professional network online.

Professional Social Networking Aha #4 | Build Your Network Offline

Just as the consummate offline professional networker seamlessly blends business and personal life, the consummate online professional networker seamlessly blends online and off. There is just no substitute for face-to-face interaction for building trust and exploring opportunities to be helpful. When someone connects with, comments on, retweets, links, likes or messages you online, check that person out and see if it makes sense to set up a call or a meeting. Combining online professional networking with offline professional networking creates a feedback loop that accelerates the expansion of your network and increases the velocity and efficiency of your communications within your network. The end result is a bigger professional network than either offline or online alone can provide, and you develop stronger, more valuable relationships within your network.

offline professional networking

For example, I can?t count the number of great professional relationships I?ve made through Chaotic Flow. Sometimes I run into a colleague who asks for advice on ?how to blog and develop an online personal brand? or I get a stuffy note from a LinkedIn group moderator rejecting one of my posts as ?self-promotion? in a vigilant effort to battle social spam, and I think to myself that they just don?t get it yet. Chaotic Flow is not about self-promotion. It?s about being helpful by sharing ideas that I (humbly) feel might interest my peers in order to meet them and develop professional relationships. I put some serious time and energy into it, so I don?t take kindly to it being misinterpreted as superficial self-promotion. ;) Chaotic Flow is an professional social networking endeavor, and my greatest reward from it is always the new relationships I establish and extend offline.

Professional Social Networking Aha #5 | It?s One Network

In the end, there is no distinction between your online professional network and your offline professional network; they should both be composed of same set of colleagues that you have met or would like to meet. Professionals whom you can help and who can help you. You may have fifty-thousand followers on Twitter, but if they aren?t people you either know or want to know, then where is value in B2B? Perhaps you can ?monetize their eyeballs,? but that would be B2C. Alternatively, if you only accept invitations on LinkedIn from people you have already met, then you may as well stick to a Rolodex.

professional social networking linkedin

Your success or failure at professional social networking is not measured by the quantity of your followers but by the quantity and quality of the referrals, references, and business opportunities you reap above and beyond what you could achieve through offline networking alone. This particular point will come up again and again in the coming posts in this series, because when we extend the concept of B2B social networking from building your professional network to building your company?s network, it will again be one network. B2B social media marketing should strive to connect online the same network of prospects, customers, experts, invluencers, consultants, investors, executives, and employees that drive referrals, references and revenue offline.

Professional Social Networking Aha #6 | No Where to Hide

There is one important difference between networking online versus networking offline: you are out in the open, all the time. When you network offline, the visibility of your actions and comments are limited to those colleagues in your vicinity. When you network online, your actions and comments are often visible to the whole world. Moreover, there are search engines, share buttons and rss feeds whose only purpose is to spread your actions and comments all over the Internet. And, those links can last a long time

b2b professional networking friends

This is the double-edged sword of professional social networking. On the one hand, the publicity helps you expand your network. On the other hand, you have nowhere to hide. So, be careful what you say and be careful who your friends are, but not so careful that you miss out on important opportunities. Good luck and good networking!

Rage against austerity: Violent clashes in Athens

In renewed unrest, workers in Greece walked off their jobs over austerity measures, while in Spain dozens of protesters clashed with police. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News' Andy Eckardt, CNBC's Julia Chatterley and wire reports

Updated at 8:59 a.m. ET: ATHENS, Greece --?Demonstrators wearing helmets and gas masks and armed with sticks clashed with police in the Greek capital on Wednesday, as a general strike was held to protest the government?s austerity drive.

Riot police fought with the protesters wearing the black clothes favored by anarchist groups for about 45 minutes in the central Syntagma Square, letting off tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

The demonstrators let off flares and a tent in the center of the square advertising an air show was set on fire.

The anarchist group appeared to be trying to cause as much damage in the square as possible.

There were also violent clashes between anti-austerity protesters and riot police in Spain on Tuesday. Police there told The Associated Press that 38 people were arrested and 64 people injured when officers clashed with protesters demonstrating against cutbacks and tax hikes.

Several thousand people converged on the Spanish Parliament building in central Madrid where more than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the building, forcing protesters to crowd nearby avenues.?Police baton-charged protesters at the front of the march and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles, the AP said. Reuters reported that police fired rubber bullets.

Spanish riot police clash with protesters during demonstrations over the government's austerity policies near the Spanish parliament on Tuesday.

The Greek government is struggling to push through more punishing austerity measures demanded by the country?s creditors.

'Only the beginning'
Initially, Syntagma Square was peaceful as tens of thousands of protesters arrived to the sound of drums. There were many elderly and middle-aged people and mothers with children among the crowd.

The strike was called by the country's two biggest unions that represent half the workforce.

"We call on everyone to take part in the strike and resist the austerity measures that hurt Greek people and the economy," Despoina Spanou, of the ADEDY labor group, said.? "This strike is only the beginning in our fight."

'It is virtually impossible to find a job': Brain drain is new Greek tragedy

Much of the union's anger is directed at spending cuts worth nearly $15.55 billion over the next two years that Greece has promised the European Union and International Monetary Fund in an effort to unlock its next tranche of aid.

While Greece gears up for more protests against austerity cuts, the health care system is in tatters with little cash for drugs or doctors. ITV's James Mates reports.

The bulk of those cuts are expected from slashing wages, pensions and welfare benefits, heaping a new wave of misery on Greeks who say repeated rounds of austerity have pushed them to the brink and failed to transform the country for the better.

A survey by the MRB polling agency last week showed that more than 90 percent of Greeks believe the planned cuts are unfair and burden the poor, with the vast majority expecting more austerity in coming years.

Joblessness strikes more young people in Europe's wealthy north

With Greece in its fifth year of recession and no light at the end of the austerity tunnel, analysts warn that Greek patience is wearing thin and a strong public backlash could tear apart the weak conservative-led coalition.

During the protests in Spain Tuesday, people chanted outside the parliament, "Let us in, we want to evict you.??

Evictions have soared in Spain as thousands of people have defaulted on bank loans.

Thousands of demonstrators march to the Spanish parliament on Tuesday.

Protesters said they were fed up with cuts to public salaries and health and education. They are also angry that the state has poured funds into crumbled banks while it is cutting social benefits.

"My annual salary has dropped by 8000 euros and if it falls much further I won't be able to make ends meet," Luis Rodriguez, 36, a firefighter who joined the protest, told Reuters. He said he is considering leaving Spain to find a better quality of life.

"We're protesting against the cuts. I've had to give up my apartment," said Ondina, a 30-year-old fine arts graduate who is without a job. She said she can't survive on an unemployment benefit of $340 a month.

Spain's 'Robin Hood' mayor on march, sparks outrage after supermarket heists

With this year's budget deficit target looking untenable, the conservative government is now looking at such things as cuts in inflation-linked pensions, taxes on stock transactions, "green taxes" on emissions or eliminating tax breaks.

Spain, also badly hit by the euro zone debt crisis, has been hit by a second recession since 2009 that has put one in four workers out of a job.

An Evolutionary Biologist at The University of Manchester, working with scientists in the United States, has found compelling evidence that parts of the brain can evolve independently from each other. It's hoped the findings will significantly advance our understanding of the brain.

The unique 15 year study with researchers at the University of Tennessee and Harvard Medical School also identified several genetic loci that control the size of different brain parts.

The aim of the research was to find out if different parts of the brain can respond independently of each other to evolutionary stimulus (mosaic evolution) or whether the brain responds as a whole (concerted evolution). Unlike previous studies the researchers compared the brain measurements within just one species. The findings have been published in the journal Nature Communications.

The brains of approximately 10,000 mice were analysed. Seven individual parts of each brain were measured by volume and weight. The entire genome, except the Y chromosome, was scanned for each animal and the gene set for each brain part identified.

Dr Reinmar Hager from the Faculty of Life Sciences compared variation in the size of the brain parts to variation in the genes. He found that the variation in the size of brain parts is controlled by the specific gene set for that brain part and not a shared set of genes.

He also compared the measurements for each mouse to the overall size of its brain. Surprisingly he found very little correlation between the sizes of the brain parts and the overall size of the brain.

Dr Hager says: "If all the different brain parts evolved as a whole we would expect that the same set of genes influences size in all parts. However, we found many gene variations for each different part of the brain supporting a mosaic scenario of brain evolution. We also found very little correlation between the size of the brain parts and the overall size of the brain. This again supports the mosaic evolutionary hypothesis."

Using the data collected from the mice Dr Hager and colleagues analysed the genes that influence the size of the brain to the genes that control the size of the body. They wanted to find out how independent size regulation of the brain is to that of the body.

They found evidence that the size of the brain is governed by an independent gene set to the one that controls the size of the body. Again they found vey little correlation between variations in the size of the body and the brain.

The evidence means that overall brain size can evolve independently of body size.

Following this research more work will be carried out to identify the specific genes that underlie the size of different parts in the brain

Dr Hager says: "If we can identify the specific genes that cause variations in the size of brain parts then there will be big implications for researchers looking at neuronal disease and brain development. We hope this research will significantly advance our understanding of the brain."

Discovery reveals how imaging agents bind to proteins that lead to Alzheimer's

BACKGROUND

In the Alzheimer's brain, hard plaques accumulate between the nerve cells while twisted fibers grow inside the nerve cells. The plaques arise from protein fragments called beta amlyoid, and the fibers form from a protein called tau. Doctors rely on brain scans to detect amyloid and tau and provide early intervention and treatment to potentially slow or reverse disease progression.

FINDINGS

How the imaging agents work that scan the Alzheimer's brain is unknown. A new UCLA study reveals the physical mechanisms that allow chemical agents to bind to and detect amyloid beta plaques and tau tangles in the brain. The discovery will speed the development of new imaging agents, enabling quicker diagnosis and earlier treatment.

Two-thirds of the world's new solar panels were installed in Europe in 2011

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Europe accounted for two thirds of the world-wide newly installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2011, with 18.5 GW. Its overall PV capacity totalled 52 GW. The yearly electricity produced by PV could power a country with the electricity demand of Austria, which corresponds to 2% of the EU's electricity needs. These are some of the highlights of the 2012 Photovoltaics Status Report published September 24 by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

The study summarises and evaluates the current activities regarding manufacturing, policies and market implementation world-wide.

Over the past ten years, the PV industry grew in Europe by an average of over 40% per year and the production costs have decreased by around 60%. Underlying this progress is the EU commitment towards PV systems as a means to achieve the goal of using 20% of renewable energy by 2020.

Germany, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom are the leaders in installed PV capacity in Europe.

Since 2000, world-wide, total PV production had growth rates of between 40 and 90%. The most rapid growth in annual production over the last five years was observed in Asia, where China alone accounts for more than 50% of the world's PV production. In addition, for the second year in a row, solar power was the renewable energy that attracted most investment, with a total of 98.5 billion euros world-wide, of which two thirds were concentrated in Europe.

A challenge for the European industry in this field is China's massive investment in PV manufacturing, which has led to an economy of scale in manufacturing in that country. However, the delivery of manufacturing equipment from Europe to Asia is still beneficial as Europe still has the lead in PV research and development, thereby innovating the European PV manufacturing equipment industry.

The report highlights that PV technology and its deployment is a global business and considers that future generations of PV technologies could spring from international cooperation on eco-innovation, in partnership with Asia and the United States.

In addition, it highlights that there is a large scope for PV innovation in the achievement of both energy efficiency and improved design in buildings. PV modules can be incorporated and specifically designed as building materials, functioning as an insulation material and fostering a new "European PV-architecture," whilst at the same time providing one of the key technologies required to achieve zero emissions buildings.
