Night Shift Linked to Increased Breast Cancer Risk | Noreen Fraser ...

Are women who work the night shift at greater risk for developing?breast cancer?

Maybe, a new study suggests.

Overall, Danish women who worked the night shift were 40% more likely to develop breast cancer than women who always worked during daytime hours.

This risk increased among women who worked more frequent night shifts for longer periods of time.

Specifically, women who worked night shifts at least three times a week for six years or longer were more than twice as likely to develop breast cancer as women who had not worked this shift as often.

The study appears in?Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Night Shift and Cancer: The Link

As many as 20% of people in Europe and the U.S. work the night shift. Exactly how night shift work may increase breast cancer risk is not clear. In 2007, the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that shift work disrupting the body clock or circadian rhythms may cause cancer. Such night work reduces production of the hormone?melatonin.

Working up to two night shifts per week did not influence breast cancer risk. This may not be long enough to disrupt the body clock, study authors conclude. What?s more, risk was also higher among self-described ?morning? people, or ?larks,? who were working the night shift. Larks may be more susceptible to body-clock disruption than owls.

The night workers in the new study tended to sunbathe more frequently than their counterparts who worked by day. This observation does not support the theory that the increased breast cancer risk among night shifters was due to less sun exposure.

Several studies suggest that night-workers have a higher incidence of breast cancer ? as well as an association with more risk factors for breast cancer (e.g.obesity,?smoking, alcohol use),? says Marisa Weiss, MD, via email. She is the president and founder of Breastcancer.org and director of breast radiation oncology and breast health outreach at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pa.

?It?s probably the combined effect of getting less quality?sleep?? fewer hours, with a disruption of circadian rhythms, more light at night ? and lower levels of melatonin, which is believed to play a role in regulating normal cell growth,? she says. ?Since the biggest risk factor for breast cancer in women is aging, it?s not surprising that getting less quality rest may play a role, since that?s the key time each day that we have to repair aging effects, i.e. the wear and tear of everyday living.?

?The findings raise some interesting questions,? says Stephanie Bernik, MD. She is the chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. ?We know that night work disrupts circadian rhythms, and any stress to [the] body probably increases risk of cancer,? she says.

So what can a woman do with this information? Most people can?t just up and quit their job, Bernik says. ?Look at the other things you can modify that we know will help lower your risk for breast cancer.? This includes?exercising?more, eating a healthy?diet, and drinking only moderate amounts of alcohol.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? The son of Malcolm X's biographer is asking Syracuse University to hand over a letter in which the slain activist writes about his shifting views on race relations, claiming his family is the rightful owner.

Malcolm X wrote to Alex Haley, his collaborator for "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," from Saudi Arabia in April 1964, about ten months before he was gunned down at a New York City hotel ballroom. The publisher of the autobiography later gave the letter to Syracuse University as part of a larger cache of papers to be used by researchers.

But Haley's son, William Haley, said the publisher never had legal title to the letter and could not give it away. His lawyer said Tuesday he plans to make a legal demand this week for the letter, which he believes is worth at least $650,000.

"The history is important for us as a family, the legacy," William Haley said. Haley said he was acting on behalf of himself and his two sisters. Haley said it's possible the family would decide to sell the letter, but that would be a group decision.

Alex Haley died in 1992.

"So much of African-American history gets lost and is sometimes not in the place where we prefer it to be," Haley said.

Malcolm X's letter, written after a pilgrimage to Mecca, addresses the recent time he spent with Muslims "whose skin was the whitest of white."

"In fact, what I have seen and experienced on this pilgrimage has forced me to 're arrange' much of my thought patterns, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions," he wrote.

The letter was sent to publisher Grove Press for inclusion in the autobiography, which was first published in 1965. Grove included the letter in files it gave to Syracuse University in 1969.

Sean M. Quimby, senior director of the university's Special Collections Research Center, said it has documentation from Grove that shows Syracuse owns the transferred archive. He said the school's ownership had never been challenged before in 43 years and he has not seen any evidence that the letter was lent, instead of given, to Grove.

"Our library and our special collections are publicly available to anyone, and there is a greater good served," Quimby added.

Haley's attorney, Gregory J. Reed of Detroit, said Haley passed along the letter to Grove only so it could be included in the autobiography and that Grove never had legal title.

Haley said he is acting now because he only found out about details of the letter recently after talking to Reed, who collects Malcolm X material.

EU Cybercrime Centre: Network Security Starts With The Device ...

The European Commission has announced its plans to create a European Cybercrime Centre in a bid to tackle rising levels of online crime across Europe.?The announcement on Wednesday, March 28th, by the Commission could not have come at a better time and shows a serious intent to fight back against the torrent of cybercrime that has affected organisations in Europe and around the world over the past year.

The ?3m agency, which is expected to open in 2013, will also be responsible for training national experts on cyber-crime and form part of the EU police agency Europol.?The EU executive sees the cybercrime centre as the focal point in co-ordinating national cyber authorities established by member states, and pooling information gathered by national and European police IT networks, in an attempt to map organised crime online, especially online fraud schemes.

The cybercrime centre, which the Commission first mooted in its 2010 Internal Security Strategy, is the latest EU move to combat cybercrime.?We see thousands of new forms of malicious software code being launched against companies and other organisations every month. The fact that Microsoft has this week completed a successful assault on some of this cyber-criminal malware, acting in concert with financial authorities, shows how seriously everyone should take this universal threat.

Microsoft has also identified more than 13 million suspected infections of the Zeus malware worldwide, which indicates the extent of the cybercrime problem.?Co-ordinated efforts, led by units such as the EU Cybercrime Centre can not only help to map the extent of online criminal activity but also advocate more robust IT defences.

MEPs and member states are finalising a directive on attacks against computer networks, which is set to criminalise the sale, production and use of ?botnets? ? networks of infected computers that can be remotely controlled to launch large-scale coordinated cyber-attacks.

These are part of the strategy against cybercrime but unless companies and organisations adopt more effective network security policies, this will be a losing battle. Both the UK and US governments advocate the adoption of Trusted Computing open-industry standards. Trusted Computing starts by securing the device that will connect to an IT network.

?If the device is secure and trusted, everything follows from there. Enterprises and public sector bodies can, with relative ease, roll out a programme that ensures every device is protected by the Trusted Platform Module or TPM, that the data is secured by use of Self Encrypting Drives ? SEDs ? and that smartphones and tablets are safe, by using the Mobile Trusted Module.

?The cost of adopting proven, trusted, open industry standards is much less than generally believed and through the lifetime of every device, proves cheaper than other options. The Trusted Computing standards also provide a fluid path to future security needs.?

With ad-saving business slow, AdKeeper expands to email - GigaOM

When AdKeeper launched as a virtual ad-clipping service last February, the big question was: will people actually want to save online ads? More than one year later, the company still says the answer is ?yes.? ?But they?re finding that consumer behavior isn?t changing as fast as they?d hoped.?So while they wait for the industry to catch up with their vision (or scramble frantically to convince people the service is worth their time, depending on your point of view), they?ve decided to spread some of the $40 million they?ve raised on other ways of connecting consumers and brands.

The company launched a new holding company Tuesday, called Keep Holdings, which manages a scaled-back AdKeeper in addition to two new products, Swizzle and Keep.com.

MaryAnn Bekkedahl, Keep Holdings? president, said the new direction isn?t a departure from the company?s original mission of connecting consumers with brands they like. And, she added, they still support the notion of ?keeping? ads.

?I believe it will be a behavior that we all know and love in the future,? she said. ?It will just take time.?

When the company launched, the industry was abuzz with talk of more creative ads, she said, pointing to more compelling ad formats such as Aol?s ?Project Devil? and the IAB?s ?Rising Stars,? as well as creative shops developing next-generation rich media ads. But, over time, the company decided that the creative energy wasn?t translating into better ads fast enough.

With the new AdKeeper, advertisers still embed KeepButton JavaScript or Flash code into their ads so that consumers can click the button to save the ads. But the company has switched to a self-service model and recently allowed consumers to pin ads to Pinterest. ?Also, instead of saving ads to a separate location, consumers can now save ads to email. Bekkedahl said that since they switched to a lower-touch model, fewer advertisers are using the product, but they?re working to bring more on board.

Keep Holdings also recently launched Swizzle, an email-based service that lets consumers manage all brand-related messages from a consolidated location. The service ports all of a consumer?s brand-related content out of their normal inbox, lets them unsubscribe from the ones they no longer wish to receive and organize the ones they do care about. Last week it opened in beta to its first few thousand users.

In the next few weeks, Keep Holdings plans to release another social commerce service called Keep.com. For now, the service is under wraps, but, in an interview with AdExchanger, CEO and co-founder Scott Kurnit described it as ?a cross between Pinterest and Instagram in terms of social shopping.?

Bekkedahl said the company currently has its hands full with the three products, but she didn?t reject the idea that Keep Holdings could continue to expand its footprint.

?As those become successful, we could have the bandwidth to take on more,? she said. ?I would be excited about considering an opportunity in ad tech.?

Homosexuality impacting on the Church

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Christian Church is between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, this institution ought not to condemn practising lesbians and gays. On the other, the Church, based on biblical principles, cannot condone the practice of homosexuality.

In the article titled 'Stop engaging in gay-rights lobbying' published in The Gleaner on May 17, 2012, the essayist lauded the view: "If we don't want God's influence in the affairs of our land, we should change our national anthem, remove the Bibles from the courtrooms, have no devotions in schools and find some other symbol by which to swear."

A sacrifice of this magnitude amounts to a total erosion of the bedrock on which our society has survived.

Absolute position

This axiom places us in an absolute position. God cannot be mocked. Either we live by His principles or dismiss them, and live with the consequences. It is urgent that the Church demand global attention in addressing this burgeoning phenomenon.

Unfortunately, the paradigm has shifted. The lifestyle of homosexuals has become a common phenomenon in Jamaica, with the country being deemed homophobic.

Do we, as a people, have a right to what is socially, culturally, and morally correct? Who defines our reality? When did we get here? It is time to defend the greater good of our society.

The Church has the largest platform on which to petition the affairs of the nation. What is urgently needed is the dismissal of denominational barriers, and for the Church to unite and intervene in social affairs. Same-sex marriage is not part of our religious or cultural orientation, and we must fight for a cause.

Iran nuclear talks Day 1: Russian calls Congress an obstacle to a deal

But that perspective burst out onto the international diplomatic stage Wednesday as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov chose the delicate moment of renewed talks between Iran and world powers to publicly advise President Obama to resist congressional pressures in order to make a diplomatic solution on Iran?s nuclear program possible.

?I hope this excessive stance by the US lawmakers will ultimately meet a responsible attitude by the US administration and the US president,? Mr. Lavrov said at a Moscow press conference.

Referring to new unilateral sanctions the US Senate approved this week, Lavrov said, ?As Iran takes a step toward the global community, the world community should take steps for weaker sanctions against Iran.?

China also said this week that now, during crucial talks, is no time to be adding to the sanctions on Iran.

Talks between Iran and world powers got under way Wednesday in Baghdad, where early signs emerged that Western objections to quickly easing economic sanctions on Iran under any circumstances were dampening prospects for a breakthrough.

The focus on sanctions pits those ? like Lavrov ? who say any demands Tehran agrees to should be matched by reciprocal steps from the international community, against those ? including much of Congress ? who say the only reason Iran has come to the table is to find a way to wiggle out from under stifling sanctions.

A bipartisan group of US senators expressed that latter view in a statement on the eve of the Baghdad talks Tuesday, in which they said ?the Iranian regime has come to the negotiating table only because of increasingly crippling pressure from sanctions. Therefore any hope for real diplomatic progress depends upon a continuing and expanding campaign of economic pressure on the Iranian regime.?

The statement, signed by 12 senators, was issued a day after the Senate, unanimously, passed a bill that would impose a new round of sanctions. The actions include a tightening of already approved measures against Iran?s central bank and new sanctions on joint ventures in the energy sector.
