LG Lucid (Verizon Wireless)

The LG Lucid ($79.99) may be a budget Android?smartphone?for Verizon Wireless, but it never seems?inexpensive. It wasn't too long ago that 4G LTE data, 1080p video recording, and a dual-core processor were considered high-end, even if cutting edge handsets are just now moving past those specs. That makes the Lucid a good choice if you don't need the absolute fastest speeds or latest features, but don't want to miss out on anything important either.

Design and Call Quality
The LG Lucid measures 4.69 by 2.45 by 0.45 inches (HWD) and weighs 5 ounces. The shell is made entirely of glossy plastic, and appears completely black from the front. There's an attractive, maroon-colored fade on the tapered back panel that gives the Lucid a classier, more translucent look, at least from that angle.?

The 4-inch IPS glass capacitive touch screen is made of Gorilla Glass, and sports a typical-for-Android 800-by-480-pixel resolution. The display is suitably bright and colorful, if not as vivid or with as deep blacks as a Super AMOLED panel. The Lucid supports plenty of gestures, including flipping the device to mute the incoming call, snoozing the alarm, or pausing video playback, as well as tapping on the sides of the device to advance the cursor in either direction while typing; I had trouble triggering the side motions, though.

For typing, you get a choice of either LG's default keyboard or Swype. Typing in portrait and landscape modes was easy in my tests, but the predictive text still needs work. For the typo "laxy," I saw five initial suggestions, none of which were "lazy" even though the z is right next to the x, and it capitalized words automatically that weren't proper names.

The Lucid hits dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz) and single-band 4G LTE (700MHz) speeds with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The phone also works as a mobile hotspot for up to 10 devices over LTE, or five over 3G, with the appropriate data plan. Voice quality was good, with a full, loud tone in the earpiece, and clear transmissions through the microphone. Reception was an issue during my tests; I heard plenty of dropouts and computerized syllables, whereas calls to the same numbers with an Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon in the same spot didn't exhibit these problems. Calls sounded fine through a Jawbone Era headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. The speakerphone was a disappointment, with only average gain and an unusually tinny and harsh timbre. The 1700mAh battery is good for a solid 6 hours and 43 minutes of talk time.

Hardware, Android, and Apps
The dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8660 CPU and 1GB RAM is now standard fare for current Android phones. Our benchmark tests pit it roughly equivalent with comparably equipped dual-core Android phones?which means fast, generally speaking, except for occasional sluggishness in the user interface and in scrolling up and down Web pages, which we've seen on plenty of Android devices. The poor reception noted above may play a role with data speeds, too?I saw an average of 7Mbps up and just 1.5 Mbps down in a series of tests, which is several Mbps lower than what the more-expensive LG Spectrum ($199.99, 3.5 stars) achieved.

The LG Lucid is yet another of a slew of phones hitting the market with the older Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS, which is frustrating. Verizon promises an upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), but hasn't set a date yet. There are five home screens you can swipe between, and LG's customized notifications bar offers one-touch settings for the phone's various radios. You'll also find LG's collapsible categories in the main menu, which helps if you like grouping icons, but it can't be turned off if you don't.

As far as bundled apps, LG throws in a copy of Polaris, which is a document-editing suite for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. Verizon also preloads Netflix and Kindle apps, cordons off its bloatware into a single menu category. You also get Google Maps Navigation for free, voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions. The Lucid shares media wirelessly to DLNA-enabled devices, though I don't know how many people actually use this feature. You also get access to Google Play (formerly the Android Market), with its 400,000+ array of third-party apps, as well as books, music, and movies.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's 4GB of free internal storage for media, plus 1.34GB of free system memory for installing apps. There's also a microSD card slot underneath the battery cover; my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine. Music tracks sounded clear through?Samsung Modus HM6450?Bluetooth headphones ($99, 4 stars), and the modified music player displayed huge album art screens and a jukebox view in landscape mode. Google Play Music is preloaded, which gives you access to millions of tracks, cloud-based storage, and inexpensive MP3 purchases. Our standard suite of test movies played smoothly in full screen mode and looked vibrant at resolutions up to 1080p, and including H.264, DivX, and XviD files.

The 5-megapixel auto-focus camera features an LED flash, face tracking, and geotagging, but no image stabilization. Test photos looked sharp, albeit with a slightly cool cast. In lower-light settings, focus was a bit softer, and details were lost in dark areas, but the amount of noise was acceptable. Recorded 1920-by-1080-pixel and 1280-by-720-pixel videos played smoothly at 29 frames per second, although they looked a little dark, and the lack of image stabilization made the 1080p video in particular look a bit jumpy. You can record and edit 1080p high-definition videos right on the handset using Video Producer, a basic moviemaking app, and there's also a front-facing camera for video chats.

It's tough to fault the Lucid purely on specs. For a budget-priced Android phone, it's quite impressive, and closer to what was called high-end just six months ago, even if it falls a bit flat with voice calls and LTE data speeds. Consider this: The Lucid absolutely destroys the Samsung Illusion ($79.99, 3 stars), which has a much lower resolution screen, a single-core processor, and lacks 4G LTE support. On the other hand, the LG Spectrum bumps the Lucid's display to a stunning 1280-by-720-pixel, 4.5-inch panel and includes a faster processor, but it exhibited uneven voice quality and overall performance in our review. Our favorite touch-screen phone on Verizon remains the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx ($299.99, 4.5 stars), which offers insanely long battery life, a slightly larger and sharper screen, and a thinner overall design, although it's considerably more expensive than the Lucid.

WASHINGTON -- Iran is providing a broad array of assistance to Syrian President Bashar Assad to help him suppress anti-government protests, from high-tech surveillance technology to guns and ammunition, U.S. and European security officials say.

Tehran's technical assistance to Assad's security forces includes electronic surveillance systems, technology designed to disrupt efforts by protesters to communicate via social media, and Iranian-made drone aircraft for overhead surveillance, the officials said. They discussed intelligence matters on condition of anonymity.

"Over the past year, Iran has provided security assistance to Damascus to help shore up Assad. Tehran during the last couple of months has been aiding the Syrian regime with lethal assistance - including rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment -- to help it put down the opposition," a U.S. official said.

"Iran has provided Damascus (with) monitoring tools to help the regime suppress the opposition. It has also shared techniques on Internet surveillance and disruption," the official continued.

Syrians brave gunfire in anti-Assad protests

He added that Iran had also provided Assad's government with "unarmed drones that Damascus is using along with its own technology to monitor opposition forces."

Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.

Iranian security officials have also traveled to Damascus to advise Assad's entourage how to counter dissent, the official said. Some Iranian officials have stayed on in Syria to advise Assad's forces, he added.

Iran's multi-pronged security aid to Syria appears to have helped Assad's government in its increasingly violent campaign to hold on to power in the face of a year-long protest movement. The United Nations estimates 8,000 civilians have died in the conflict.

However, the U.S. and European officials said the Syrian government's survival is not totally dependent on continuing help from Tehran.

Assad's wife banned from traveling, shopping in EU

U.S. and allied official broadly agree that Assad's control remains solid. His opponents are hopelessly disorganized, the officials said, which may make it possible for the Syrian president and his entourage to hold onto power for years.

"At current levels Iranian aid is important but not really a game changer in the overall conflict," a U.S. official noted.

Paul Conroy, a photographer for the Sunday Times, was badly injured while on assignment in Syria and his colleague ? legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed. Conroy joins NBC's Andrea Mitchell to reflect on the situation.

Iran has for decades been a patron to Syria, which has helped funnel aid and weapons to the Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah in Lebanon.

During the protests that followed Iran's disputed 2009 presidential election -- the biggest mass protests since the Islamic Republic's founding in 1979 -- Iranian authorities disrupted social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as cell phone networks.

Last June the U.S. Treasury Department announced economic sanctions against two of Iran's most senior police officials for allegedly helping Assad's government crush protests.

The Treasury imposed U.S. economic sanctions on Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam and Ahmad-Reza Radan, chief and deputy chief of Iran's national police force, because their agency had "provided support to the Syrian General Intelligence Directorate and dispatched personnel to Damascus in April to assist the Syrian government in suppressing the Syrian people."

The Treasury alleged that Radan had traveled to Damascus to meet with Syrian security agencies, to whom he allegedly provided "expertise to aid in the Syrian government crackdown on the Syrian people."

U.S. officials said Iranian efforts to bolster Syria's surveillance capabilities have been supplemented by deliveries to Syria of Iranian-made unarmed surveillance drone aircraft.

Earlier this month a specialized website, The Aviationist, reported that a drone flying over the city of Homs, the site of recent violent clashes between government and opposition forces, had been identified as a "Pahpad" drone, which the website said meant "remotely piloted aircraft" in Farsi.

Saudi Arabia will deliver military equipment to Syrian rebels in an effort to stop the bloodshed. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

In February another specialized website, Open Source GEOINT, published freeze-frame images from what purported to be an amateur cameraman's video of a suspected drone flying over a Damascus suburb.

Iran vows to retaliate 'on the same level' to US or Israel attack

The website noted that some news reports had suggested that the United States was flying intelligence drones over Syria but that the drone in the pictures did not appear to be a U.S. model.

The website cited speculation that the drone might be of Iranian origin. Ynet News, an Israeli website, reported this month that Syria's defense industry produces drones that are technologically identical to Iranian-produced models and speculated that these domestically produced models were what Syrian security forces had deployed.

However, a U.S. official said that some of Syria's drones had come directly from Iran.

Last weekend the Iranian news agency Fars announced that Iranian experts had produced what it called a "new type of drone" known as the Shaparak, or "Butterfly," which it said was "capable of carrying out military and border patrol missions."

China Unicom saw a 14 percent bump in profits for 2011, with company execs attributing much of that gain to its exclusivity deal on the iPhone. Despite the increased income, China's second largest network still fell short of analyst estimates, with much of the blame being pinned on the carrier's need to increase capital spending. New customers means network expansion and more handset subsidies, and the firm's augmenting its spending by 30 percent to 100 billion Yuan (about $16 billion) to keep up. This extra expense caused stock in the network to cool a little, falling 3.1 percent after the announcement. Not so good news then, considering what's around the corner.

Analysis: Mayor Gray's Campaign Finance Response, Virginia Budget Fallout

News in the District was dominated by allegations of campaign finance violations by Mayor Vincent Gray's 2010 campaign. The Washington Post reports that federal investigators are looking into an alleged shadow campaign that had not been disclosed. Meanwhile, in Virginia, lawmakers made progress on a state budget proposal, and a Congressional primary race is heating up in Maryland. Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney joins WAMU's Morning Edition host Matt McCleskey for a look at these local stories. Following are highlights of the conversation.

As more allegations come out about the campaign, what do you make about how Mayor Gray is responding?

"Mayor Gray is saying very little about this, and I think it's hurting him in the court of public opinion. When he appears in public and reporters try to talk to him about these allegations, he basically cuts it off. He sticks to his standard line: he's called for an investigation, he wants it completed as soon as possible. He won't respond to specific allegations, which have been mounting."

"He hasn't been resorting to the strategy that one often sees in cases like this of mounting a counter-offensive, saying 'this is all unproven, the media is exaggerating, the prosecutor is on a witchhunt.' He basically just tried to make it go away. Now, I think he's probably listening to his lawyers, who typically say 'Don't say anything, because it can hurt you in court.' But if it's a sound legal strategy, I think it's a terrible political strategy. It inevitably encourages the public to think the worst is true."

A budget proposal is heading toward a vote in the Virginia State Senate after the Democrats no longer made their support contingent on having more power in committees, what impact does that have on Democrats in Richmond?

"I think the Democrats certainly lost this round of the public relations battle over the budget. They held up the budget in the State Senate originally to pressure the Republicans to give them a more equitable division of power in committee assignments. But the Republicans effectively called their bluff, effectively, and the Democrats caved. Now they're suddenly saying, "Let's forget about those committee assignments and just focus on spending issues.'"

"Now there's no final deal -- there still will have to be a conference committee to hash out the differences in the versions, but it does look like its headed to a solution basically because the Democrats have backed off on this issue of committee assignments. I think the best thing the Democrats can say is that they called attention to this issue, which is that they got short-changed by Republicans when the Senate was organized, and that is a real issue in the way that the Senate conducts its business. The GOP will be able to say that petty Democratic obstructionism prevented the legislature from finishing it's business on time. I expect we'll hear a lot about that from Republicans in coming months."

Goldman loses bid to end lawsuit over risky CDO

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc lost its bid to dismiss a lawsuit accusing it of defrauding investors by selling risky debt linked to subprime mortgages that it planned to bet against.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero in New York keeps alive a hedge fund's claims over a $2 billion offering of collateralized debt obligations, amid intense scrutiny over Goldman's activities before and after the 2008 financial crisis.

Marrero said the hedge fund Dodona I LLC may pursue nearly all its claims against Goldman, including that the Wall Street bank recklessly or intentionally sold the Hudson Mezzanine Funding CDOs to offload subprime risk on unsuspecting investors.

"Goldman's sudden -- and prescient -- shift to reducing subprime risk supports the inference that it possessed some unique insight" about the "bittersweet potion" of CDOs it was selling, Marrero wrote in a 64-page decision.

A Goldman spokesman, Michael DuVally, declined to comment. Richard Klapper, a lawyer for the bank and co-defendants Peter Ostrem and Derryl Herrick, who were Goldman structured finance executives, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Lawrence Lederer, a lawyer representing Dodona, called Marrero's decision "extremely well-reasoned, measured, and very substantially supported. We are eager to ultimately try the case on behalf of our client and other investors in the Hudson CDOs."

SCRUTINY FROM WASHINGTON

The decision was issued one week after Goldman faced a public assault from former banker Greg Smith, who in a New York Times op-ed piece called the bank a "toxic" place that put its own interests ahead of those of its clients.

Goldman's CDO practices have drawn regulatory scrutiny. In April 2010, Goldman agreed to pay $550 million to settle U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charges that it sold the risky Abacus 2007-AC1 CDO while letting hedge fund billionaire John Paulson bet against it. The bank did not admit wrongdoing.

Last April, the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations concluded that Goldman tried to profit at clients' expense ahead of the 2008 financial crisis by shedding exposure to subprime mortgages, including by selling the Hudson securities, and then shorting that market.

"RUBE GOLDBERG-LIKE" SECURITIES

Dodona was formed in 2007 by Alan Brody, who also created the firm Epirus Capital Management LLC.

It accused Goldman of creating the Hudson Mezzanine Funding 2006-1 and 2006-2 CDOs, which were backed by residential mortgage-backed securities, in late 2006 as part of a secret scheme to offload subprime risk.

The hedge fund said it lost nearly all of its $4 million investment, selling its holdings for 2.5 cents on the dollar in October 2007 after having paid 95 cents or 100 cents on the dollar the previous winter.

Marrero dismissed one claim by Dedona that accused Goldman of market manipulation.

But the judge said even "large sophisticated" investors such as Dodona might not have understood Goldman's CDOs, and that the bank's boilerplate disclosures on their "speculative" nature might be inadequate.

Goldman "created the synthetic CDOs here in dispute, a form of investment instrument that, Rube Goldberg-like, few but a select group of its own designers, engineers and lawyers could clearly explain, let alone understand, precisely how it functions or exactly what it does," the judge wrote.

The case is Dodona I LLC v. Goldman Sachs & Co et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 10-07497.

Jack Ryan Reboot Loses Director

Jack Ryan's return to the big screen hits another snag as director Jack Bender exits the project. The movie is scheduled to shoot this summer after Chris Pine is done with Star Trek 2, but a source told the Hollywood Reporter that a scheduling conflict caused the director to drop out.

Since this long-gestating Jack Ryan movie is the first to be not based on one of Tom Clancy's novels, they seemed to have some trouble of getting the story right. Hossein Amini wrote the first draft back in 2008, but Adam Cozad board the project later and re-tooled one of his spec script for the movie. Anthony Peckham and Steve Zaillian also took a pass at script before handing it off to David Koepp.

It was Zaillian's exit from the script process that caused Chris Pine to move forward with Star Trek 2 in the first place, which, in turn, resulted in Bender leaving.

The movie's plot as it stands now is about Jack Ryan, recently discharged from the Marines, working as a financial consultant for a Russian billionaire. During the course of his work, he somehow got framed for a terrorist plot.

Chris Pine is the latest actor to play the title character, Jack Ryan. The character has been previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck.

Pine is currently film Star Trek 2 but can been seen in the upcoming drama People Like Us opposite Olivia Wilde and Elizabeth Banks on June 29, 2012.

Report Shows Progress, Decline in Personal Finance Education

After twelve years of surveying the state of economics and personal financial education around the country, The Council for Economic Education finds cause for both hope and concern. The 2011 edition of the Survey of the States: Economic and Personal Finance Education in Our Nation?s Schools shows that while there has been an improvement since the survey was first published in 1998, in the past two years, some districts have begun to give back the gains they have made in the teaching of these subjects since the survey began.

?While many states have addressed this gap in education curriculum, there is still a large segment of the American K-12 student population that is not being exposed to economic and financial education,?said CEE President & CEO Nan J. Morrison

The 2008 recession and the events that precipitated it brought home the importance of a financially literate population and improved understanding of economics. And while the report findings show that 22 states now require a course in economics as part of the high school graduation requirements, a gain of one since 2009, three fewer states now test the student knowledge of the subject before they leave school.

The picture is even grimmer for the subject of personal finance. Few states include courses on money management in their high school curriculum, much less require students to take the subject in order to obtain a diploma. Overall, only 13 states that comprise about 25% of the U.S. population have personal finance high school requirements, which leaves nearly three-quarters of Americans without any personal finance courses by the time they leave high school and enroll in college.

The report was written by the CEE in partnership with the Calvin K. Kazanjian Economic Foundation which is named after its founder Mr. Kazanjian, who, as a long-timer businessman and manager believed that the country would derive great economic benefit from citizens who understood economic concepts and principles. He proposed the Economic Foundation in 1947 as a means of advancing these beliefs.

'Ghost Hunter' game lures players to take pictures for researchers

With all the pictures people have posted on photo-sharing websites such as Flickr, someone could almost build a map of all the structures in the world. Almost, but not quite. Some places are far more popular in photos (the Statue of Liberty) than others (the laundromat). People also tend to take pictures of the front of buildings and monuments. ?"Flickr has thousands of photos of the front of the Lincoln Memorial," Fabian Bustamante, an engineer at Northwestern University, said in a statement. "But who takes a picture of the back? Very few people."

So Bustamante developed an Android game called Ghost Hunter. Players get a map of their neighborhood with ghosts shown on it. They track a ghost until they get close, when the map will switch to an augmented reality screen that shows a video stream of the surroundings with arrows pointing toward where the ghost is. Players follow the arrows until they get the ghost in their crosshairs, then zap! Each zapped ghost earns them points. ?And as they're zapping, the phone actually takes a photo of the place.?

In this way, Bustamante got pictures all around the Charles Deering Library on Northwestern's campus. He compared those photos with photos of Deering Library on Flickr and found that Flickr photos were much more concentrated at the front of the building.?

He also adjusted the game and got it to capture noise in the locations where players zapped ghosts. He got data from a larger area of Northwestern University compared to another application he made that asked people to record noise as they walked around Northwestern University in their daily lives. ?

He calls the program, which convinces people to gather the data scientists want by making it into a game, "soft control" of crowds. Such "soft control" games could also encourage people to go to unusual places and collect data about air quality, traffic or anything else researchers want to study, Bustamante wrote in a paper he presented February 28 at the HotMobile conference for mobile apps. ?

The data Ghost Hunter gathers is rendered anonymous before researchers get it, Bustamante wrote in his paper. The game doesn't ask players to give up more private information than other location-based apps, such as Foursquare and Gowalla. It could potentially lure people into unsafe places, so it depends on the player's own judgment about whether to follow ghosts. If Ghost Hunter and similar games were widely used in the future to help scientists gather data, they will have to tell players that's what they're doing, Bustamante said.?

The Official Nintendo Magazine has revealed the Japanese box art for the latest Pokemon games. Below are the boxes, which show off the new legendary Pokemon and what appears to be lightning?and fire.

It is likely that we will see similar box art in North America. Pokemon Black and White 2 are currently set for release in Japan in June along with North America and Europe some time in?the third quarter of 2012.

Blaze, the manufacturer of the new portable Neo Geo X have revealed the device?s price to MVC. According to the company, the current set price for the device is ?500, but they are open?to fan reaction over the idea of a price drop.

A price drop would be good considering the direct currency conversion to USD puts the device at $792.

Epic and Chair have updated Infinity Blade 2 to take advantage of the ?increased memory and processing power? of the iPad 2, ?yielding even higher performance and more sophisticated rendering features.? Players won?t see a huge difference in the game, but those on a new iPad will?see a ?prettier? game to match the new screen.

As well, Epic and Chair have teased a new Infinity Blade 2 update for next month. This update will add new enemies, weapons, and other items.?This also includes a new feature called ClashMob, in which ?players from around the globe will work together to complete objectives and earn rewards.?
