Living laboratory takes shape | infonews.co.nz New Zealand's local ...
A Massey University project to create a ?living laboratory? to tackle sustainability issues received a boost from a world-renowned researcher this month.
The Challenging Sustainability project, led by School of People, Environment and Planning head Dr Allanah Ryan, brings together researchers from across the University to work together with external stakeholders on problems confronting New Zealand and the world.
The group is focused on three collaborative projects in the central and lower North Island: an urban agriculture project with Wellington City council, a region-wide sustainability strategy with the Hawkes Bay Regional Council and a project with the Palmerston North City Council on peri-urban development.
Professor Chris Ryan from the University of Melbourne is Director of the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab (VEIL). Allanah Ryan says she ?invited Chris to come because we have this idea to create a living laboratory, and we were really looking for a model from elsewhere that we might be able to learn from?.
Chris Ryan says VEIL is focused on looking at the ?wicked? problems facing society. ?We exist within an environment and an economy and a social organisation and culture that has been based on 200 years of reliance on fossil fuels,? he says. ?Our existence depends on enormous flows of those fuels and yet we have a period of 15 years, according to the International Energy Agency, to turn that around. It?s a significant challenge.?
The lab brings together people from across the University of Melbourne and those outside it that are capable of thinking about solutions to these problems, he says. ?We try to envisage plausible futures and then identify directions for research and innovation that will get us there in the next 25 years.?
Chris Ryan says the Massey project shows great promise. ?It is a great group with really emergent ideas and there is a fantastic spirit here,? he says. ?It has the feeling of something that?s reached its take-off point.?
The Challenging Sustainability team will produce a white paper summarising their experiences and findings and present it to the University in June.

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) UC Davis scientists have uncovered a key suspect in the destructive inflammation that underlies heart disease and diabetes. The new research shows elevated levels of a receptor present on leucocytes of the innate immune response in people at risk for these chronic diseases. The receptors are the body's first line of defense against infectious invaders, and they trigger a rush of cytokines, the body's aggressive immune soldiers, into the bloodstream.
The research, published in the journal Diabetes Care on Feb. 22, studied individuals diagnosed with metabolic syndrome -- a cluster of cardio-metabolic risk factors linked to many life-threatening diseases. Metabolic syndrome is found in about a third of American adults and people in other industrialized countries.
The syndrome is a high-risk obesity state as previously shown by diabetes expert Ishwarlal Jialal and his team at the UC Davis Medical Center. It increases the risk of developing diabetes at least five-fold and heart disease by two- to four-fold. Jialal, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at UC Davis Health System, also led the new study.
The receptors, or sensors, on cells are called Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and the Nobel Prize was awarded last year for discoveries that showed they initiate the swift innate immune response to infections. But the inflammation they trigger can also be harmful. In mice it has been shown that two TLRs -- TLR2 AND TLR4 -- are important in the development of both diabetes and heart disease.
These receptors are present in many cells, but they are most abundant on monocytes, a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in the inflammation response to invading microbes. They can be triggered by pathogen products or signals from dying cells and saturated fatty acid.
The UC Davis research focused on TLR2 and TLR4. For the study, researchers evaluated 90 individuals between the ages of 21 and 70, of whom 49 had at least three features characteristic of metabolic syndrome. These included hypertension, low HDL-cholesterol, high triglycerides and obesity, as evidenced by increased waist circumference, or a glucose level between 101-125 mg/dl but not indicative of diabetes. Members of the control group had no more than two such markers. People with atherosclerosis, diabetes, inflammatory or malignant disease, and other disorders were excluded to study the receptor function without confounding variables, and to gain insights into nascent or early metabolic syndrome prior to complications.
Comparisons of the blood of participants from both groups showed that the metabolic syndrome group exhibited significantly higher levels of both messenger RNA and cell-surface receptor proteins TLR2 and TLR4, increased levels of the master switch of inflammation in the nucleus, and a much higher concentration of immune soldiers in the blood, such as cytokines, that create inflammation.
All of these abnormalities were independent of obesity, suggesting they are due to the metabolic-syndrome environment. The levels of both free fatty acids and the product of gram-negative bacteria endotoxin also were increased in the blood of individuals with metabolic syndrome at least two- and three-fold respectively, and explained in part the TLR4 increase.
The research suggests that suppressing TLR activity with weight loss and with diet, exercise and drugs targeted specifically at these receptors, might prove effective in treating heart disease, diabetes and other conditions linked to metabolic syndrome.
Jialal pointed out that not all obese people suffer from the constellation of symptoms that make up metabolic syndrome, and in fact, about 30 percent of obese people are at low risk for metabolic complications, according to one key study. But since research shows increased inflammation in obese people, the Toll-like receptor and monocyte findings may help define individuals at high risk for obesity.
Jialal's research group reported last year that monocytes and related macrophages were present in the fat of individuals with metabolic syndrome and that their fat was more inflamed. The new finding shows that the Toll-like sentinel proteins might be directing an increase in this activity, and that the inflammatory agents are making it into the bloodstream, from where they can go to any part of the body, including fat, liver and heart.

Comparisons of the blood of participants from both groups showed that the metabolic syndrome group exhibited significantly higher levels of both messenger RNA and cell-surface receptor proteins TLR2 and TLR4, increased levels of the master switch of inflammation in the nucleus, and a much higher concentration of immune soldiers in the blood, such as cytokines, that create inflammation.
All of these abnormalities were independent of obesity, suggesting they are due to the metabolic-syndrome environment. The levels of both free fatty acids and the product of gram-negative bacteria endotoxin also were increased in the blood of individuals with metabolic syndrome at least two- and three-fold respectively, and explained in part the TLR4 increase.
The research suggests that suppressing TLR activity with weight loss and with diet, exercise and drugs targeted specifically at these receptors, might prove effective in treating heart disease, diabetes and other conditions linked to metabolic syndrome.
Jialal pointed out that not all obese people suffer from the constellation of symptoms that make up metabolic syndrome, and in fact, about 30 percent of obese people are at low risk for metabolic complications, according to one key study. But since research shows increased inflammation in obese people, the Toll-like receptor and monocyte findings may help define individuals at high risk for obesity.
Jialal's research group reported last year that monocytes and related macrophages were present in the fat of individuals with metabolic syndrome and that their fat was more inflamed. The new finding shows that the Toll-like sentinel proteins might be directing an increase in this activity, and that the inflammatory agents are making it into the bloodstream, from where they can go to any part of the body, including fat, liver and heart.

'Downton Tabby' tribute is the cat's meow

Whatever will we do now that the second season of "Downton Abbey" has ended? Yes, patience befits young ladies and gentlemen, but waiting for Season 3 is so dreary -- and our character-inspired paper dolls (courtesy New York Magazine's Vulture blog) can only entertain for so long. Fortunately, Catsterpiece Theater has come to the rescue with "Downton Tabby."

In this heartfelt tribute, Lady Mary -- er, Lady Tabby -- is refined, well-dressed and enigmatic, though she insists (via captioning) that "i iz no lady." Is PPC Advertising Still Worthwhile?
PPC or pay per click advertising has been touted by many as being the way in which they have made a lot of money online. But does that mean it is suitable for everyone? And is it really still worth doing anyway, or has it seen its best days already?
This is an intriguing question anyway, but especially so considering that the economy is far from at its best at the moment. Whatever you think of it, PPC costs money ? and every cent we spend has to be carefully evaluated at present to ensure we are going to get a good return from it. With less people out there spending less money, it could easily turn into an expensive mistake.
One thing you need to be aware of is that different people approach their PPC campaigns in different ways. Some of them like to control the whole thing themselves. Others hire an outside company to do it all for them, using their knowledge and expertise to gain what often turn out to be better results.
Of course there are certain forms of online marketing that can be done for very little cost at all.
We can reasonably expect these to receive a boost during hard times, so there is no reason to suspect that it will be any different at the moment. It makes sense to look at what is working and what isn?t, though, because there is little logic in continuing with something that effectively involves throwing money away. In the same sense, if your existing PPC campaign is creating a profit (i.e. bringing in more money than you are spending on it) then I cannot see why it should ever be stopped.
However that is just scratching the surface of what is going on here. There are plenty of marketers out there who will tell you that this form of advertising is very definitely still worthwhile ? provided you are doing it right.
There are thousands of people who think that PPC advertising is a quick and easy way to make money. And of course we know that this isn?t the case. It takes knowledge and skill to get the best results from pay per click, and that means you must make every effort to ensure you keep an eye on what is going on.
A campaign that previously did well and is now dying on its feet does not mean that pay per click is not working any more. It means you need to change what you are doing. And if that means hiring a company to get the best possible results for your needs, then that could mean the difference between success and failure.
In truth, pay per click advertising still works very well for those who apply their knowledge and experience to it to get the results they want. It is not (and it has never been) a ?set it up and forget it? type of strategy. Markets change, people change and requirements change all the time.
So if you think that PPC isn?t worth bothering with any more, perhaps it would pay you well to think about whether you have changed with the market or not. If you haven?t, you should take a fresh look at this form of advertising.

Arizona retail sales reached $5.16 billion in December -- the first time in four years that they hit or surpassed the $5 billion mark in that month.
The latest numbers from the Arizona Department of Revenue indicate that December retail sales have finally returned to their pre-recession levels and also to numbers that were more typical before the boom of the mid-2000s.
Still, Arizona State University economist Dennis Hoffman of the W.P. Carey School of Business said he was disappointed that sales in December were only only about 3.7 percent above the previous year. He had hoped for about a 5 percent increase.
"It is not a disastrous story. It is a clear indication that this recovery is going to be moderately paced. It is not going to be a robust recovery," he said. "There are no signs of euphoria among the consumers."
The best news is that consumers continue to buy motor vehicles as auto sales rose about 9 percent over the previous year, he said.
Hoffman also said retail sales might have been higher if there had not been a lot of discounting. There is no way to determine how much that affected sales, he said.
"So some of this could have been consumers actually stepping up to the plate and getting all the products they want and need at a pretty robust pace. But they are more frugal in going after the bargains and taking advantage of the competitive pressures that exist in retail," he said.

Bill Clinton PBS Documentary: Robert Reich, Dick Morris Dish On Monica Lewinsky Scandal
Monica Lewinsky's name will likely find its way back into the headlines when PBS runs its two-part, four-hour documentary on former president Bill Clinton Monday night.
The documentary, titled "Clinton," is part of PBS' "American Experience" series and covers the domestic and international issues that marked Clinton's two-term presidency.
But it's what Clinton's closest advisors have to say about the president's 1998 affair with Lewinksy that may be of greater interest to many.
Among those interviewed are the former president's re-election campaign manager, Dick Morris, who recalls the moment Clinton confided in him about the affair.
"When the Lewinsky scandal broke, the President paged me and I returned the call," Morris says in this video preview clip. "He said, 'Ever since I got here to the White House I've had to shut my body down, sexually I mean, but I screwed up with this girl. I didn't do what they said I did, but I may have done so much that I can't prove my innocence."
Covering up the affair would ultimately lead the House of Representatives to bring impeachment charges of perjury and obstruction of justice against Clinton, who was acquitted after a 21-day televised Senate trial.

Good art rarely dies? | Orbit Books | Science Fiction, Fantasy ...

It?s a little amusing to hear some people who read my new novel The Troupe say that they?ve never heard of vaudeville.
Of course they?ve heard of vaudeville. Everyone?s heard of vaudeville. They probably just don?t know it yet.
Part of the problem is the term itself: ?vaudeville? is a vague word for a vague era. It refers to a period in American history ? before radio, and definitely before the advent of film ? where the only entertainment you could really ever see was on the stage. Since this valuable commodity was limited to such an exclusive place, some enterprising people capitalized on it, and set up circuits of theaters across the country where acts could tour, living out of suitcases and hotels and performing in New York one night, Boston the next, and so on, all overseen by one centralized booking office.
That?s the structure of vaudeville. But it?s not what vaudeville is, no more than I am calcium or carbon or simply a moderately well-organized system of nerves.
It?s vague because it pulls its origins from English music halls and burlesque halls and beer halls: things that are an awful lot like vaudeville, but simply aren?t perpetrated on the same scale. And though everyone agrees that vaudeville died with the development of film, what most people forget is that it didn?t really die: it just got refracted.
Some vaudeville stars became silent movie stars, some of which went on to star in ?talkies,? when sound became more manageable. And vaudeville theaters did not suddenly collapse with the release of film: rather, many were slowly converted into the first movie theaters.
Vaudeville was not replaced by film: it was the space or stage that film came to occupy. The audiences who liked vaudeville were the people the film industry wanted to speak to. In a very direct way, vaudeville defined the early days of film, which of course defined every day after that.
There is, of course, the matter of a live art ? one performed in person, in the flesh ? being replaced by a dead one. But I don?t think this is apt, either. Because part of what gives vaudeville its allure is the profound giddiness of such bizarre acts being performed in front of a live audience.
And do you think that giddiness isn?t inherent in this scene, performed by veterans of vaudeville and English movie halls?
Watching this scene makes you realize that people came to movies to get the same things they got out of vaudeville: musical performances mixed with comedy and acting. They didn?t want just one thing or the other. But there was a certain type of musical performance people wanted to see: they wanted something unusual, and striking, which the group The Avalon Boys readily provide.
But the scene also communicates the sheer joy of seeing live music. Laurel and Hardy spent what would today be an unconscionable amount of time simply watching the music, and reacting to it. The audience watches an audience, for seconds and frames on end. Yet the passiveness of the scene is overcome by Laurel and Hardy?s evident delight at what is happening.
They love this. Seeing this music is doing something to them.
And what it does is inspire them to dance. And though to some this iconic scene may be unfamiliar, the number of remixes and manipulations found on Youtube say it?s a long way from being forgotten.
In fact, it?s not just enough to watch the dance. People want to dance with them.
Yes, you are seeing Tilda Swinton ? abstract, elite, aloof, intellectual Tilda Swinton ? dance the Laurel and Hardy dance in Edinburgh alongside hundreds of people. Here?s another angle, shot from a crowd member at the flash mob:
Vaudeville has never really died. It set the mold for nearly every touring band today: every band or act has a booking agent, whose career wouldn?t exist today if vaudeville hadn?t necessitated its creation. But it goes beyond structure: look at W00tstock, which describes itself quite aptly as ?nerd vaudeville.? Look at Human Giant, at Funny or Die, or Stella. Look at the Upright Citizens Brigade. These are all productions that want to relay to you not only humor, but the sheer delight of seeing such humor in real life.
Vaudeville is just one facet of the joy of the strange and unusual. This joy hasn?t ever died, nor will it. It just gets, like light, refracted, bent into other wavelengths and shot into different places, all of them rays of light, shooting into the dark.
That, of course, is not only the nature of vaudeville and performance, but the nature of The Troupe. At the heart of The Troupe is a song, and the song that must be sung on and on ? for if the song is not sung, then the world will fail.
The song has been sung in a variety of ways: it?s been sung in medieval courts, in Bunraku shows, in fields and in streets and mountains, until finally it?s found its way to vaudeville, where it tours the dives and slummy theaters, a splinter of the eternal gradually revealed in a world of drifting shadows.
The plot of the book is fiction, of course. But as for the conceit? sometimes I wonder. Possibly not.

How hard can it be to pass a Chinese driver's test? Very
Prime Minister Stephen Harper?s panda-collection trip is over, and China?s leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping is in Washington. So I?m ? again ? thinking about getting my Chinese driver?s licence.
It?s an idea I?ve been toying with for the three years I?ve lived here. Neither I nor The Globe and Mail owns a car in Beijing ? I?ve gotten by this far using taxis and the expanding Beijing metro system ? but the idea of not being allowed to drive bothers me nonetheless. And foreign driver?s licences aren?t considered valid here.

The biggest barrier to me getting behind the wheel and joining Beijing?s traffic jams has always been the legendary Chinese driver?s licence test. I know grown men and women ? veteran drivers who have negotiated roads elsewhere for decades without incident ? who have been reduced to curses and tears by the, uh, quirky nature of some of the questions.
I have colleagues here who have taken the test four times without passing, while many Chinese do whatever they can to get their licences without taking the test. (Creating the havoc on the roads that I?ve written about before, where neither police nor drivers seem sure of the rules. Traffic accidents are unsurprisingly the leading cause of death for Chinese under the age of 45.
Why all the angst? Because the test (like exams in Chinese schools), is about putting critical thought ? and your own experience aside and just memorizing the answers.
A few examples that I came across today in my studies:
5.10.2.1 When a vehicle encounters an emergency on an expressway, the driver should swiftly turn the steering wheel to evade.
Answer: Wrong
The possibility that you might only have time to swiftly turn the steering wheel is not to be considered. Nor is the closed-ended nature of the question, which leaves you smashing into the ?emergency? if you don?t steer away. The answer is what Traffic Management Bureau of the Beijing Public Security Bureau says it is.
Often, the correct answer is the vaguest one.
5.10.1.1 When discovering people or animals crossing the expressway, the driver should ________.
A. Immediately apply emergency braking
B. Immediately turn right to evade
C. Take decisive measures to evade and minimize the loss
D. Immediately turn left to evade
Answer: C
And there?s not much room for debate.
